About the Photographer

Artist's Statement

I use photography as a means of self-expression -- I make pictures for myself, to explore my relationship with the world around me. My photographs also act as my own personal diary where the pictures stand for what I have seen and felt at particular times in the past, sort of visual markers as I journey through life. I also get a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction in taking pictures. I try to find the uncommon in the common.

The desire to pursue photography started about 7-8 years back, inspired by a friend who used to believe strongly that individuality is something everyone should strive for, and to use it to achieve or express something that is unique to them. This philosophy got me thinking as to what I do best and what do I feel most satisfied and fulfilled doing. The answer was photography. I self taught my self in the beginning from books and articles on the internet and by experimenting with the camera. Later on I decided to polish my skills and take them to the next level by taking a few photography classes. This exhibition is the culmination of all those classes and I can see that I have come far from where I started, thanks to the courses. For this I have to thank Richard Stromberg for creating a community where photographers can come to learn and share.

This particular set of photographs is themed as 'Modes of Transportation'. The pictures span several countries like Sri Lanka, Malta, Peru and the United States. Nowadays we take the different forms of transportation for granted, but if we think about it for a moment, it would dawn on us how much flexibility these many ways to travel give us to see and connect with distant places and people. The pictures also provide a unique glimpse into these cultures and how they rely on transportation to move about.
