Artist's Statement
I take a cinematic approach to photography by letting a story come through the image. With a photograph I am able to show a fleeting snippet of time that will never be repeated in quite the same way again.
The photos I have chosen for this exhibition all depict a fleeting moment. A moment caught by careful observation. Each in a special environment or place. All in some way influenced and made possible by their settings. All focus mainly on an individual.
A man climbing a steep stairway in Amalfi, on time worn steps. A woman quietly prays as a bright light fills a pew at St. Peters, Rome. A robed person praises the setting sun in Venice, California. A jogger runs surrounded by lights and reflections in a Chicago pedway. A woman closes her eyes briefly in front of a Cathedral door in Florence. Finally a man takes a break on the steps in front of the Hancock center. The actions of each is defined or made possible by the environment in which they appear.
Some of these photos hint at greater mysteries. The woman at the cathedral door, what is she experiencing at that very moment and why. What special meaning does a setting sun have for the man in a robe? What is the man at the Hancock center thinking?
I printed all of my photos on Hahnemuhle Baryta FB archival papers. Each was shot with a digital camera.
