Solar Eclipse and Astrophotography

Experience the Wonders of Nature Safely

A total solar eclipse will occur on August 21, 2017.  The path of the eclipse is projected to pass over the southern part of Illinois starting around 10:20 AM and lasting until about 1:30 PM.  In order to properly review and record the total solar eclipse, a four-part workshop is being scheduled, as follows:


Part 1: Classroom examination of the details of a solar eclipse and astrophotogrpahy, including the astronomy, safety and equipment required.  Sources for equipment will be discussed. This session will be conducted at the Ravenswood Studio and is expected to last between 90 minutes and two hours. Date: Monday, July 10 at 7:00 PM.


Part 2: Daytime practice and calibration session, using your equipment to capture the sun so all settings are known. Location to be determined.  Estimated to last about two hours. Date: Sunday, July 23 at 11:00 AM.


Part 3a: Astrophotography beginning about an hour after sunset on Sunday, August 20,  and lasting up to three hours.  Images of the Milky Way and light painting.


Part 3b: The eclipse, in the Carbondale area Sunday morning, beginning about 8:00 AM. Specific location to be determined.  Estimated time on site about five hours, with the eclipse lasting about three hours. 


Part 4: Presentations by participants.  The presentations will be conducted at the Ravenswood Studio and is expected to last about an hour. Date: Thursday, August 24 at 7:00 PM.
