Who We Are
We Are The Same Photography Program that was at The Jane Addams Center, Hull House (JACHH, on Broadway & Belmont that started in 1969. Richard was the Founder and Director of that Program. This is his new place of learning. Many of the same staff are from Jane Addams Center.
Photography Instruction for Everyone!
Richard Stromberg taught photography classes at the legendary Jane Addams Center at Belmont & Broadway for 33 years. In 2001, Hull House sold the Center, so Richard, with a cadre of students and volunteers, started the Chicago Photography Center on Lincoln Avenue. Richard and his merry band built the Center – quite literally.
Together, and under Richard's leadership, they designed and built out the space and opened for business in 2003, with Richard as program director and lead instructor. Then, in the fall of 2008, a new board of directors fired Richard - through email – explaining to Richard that he was an "at will" employee. Richard was more than 60 years old and had become disabled. See the Reader story and/or RSCPC History (some of Richard's property has still not been returned. Don't get him started. OK, ask him if you want to. :) cpc never made good on their settlement offer to Richard, and as of Christmas 2010, withdrew the offer completely. In December of 2011, cpc failed to make good on their commitment to buy the space from the 27 investors who put up $350,000 for the space that cpc still occupies. The investors will likley lose their investment because cpc now says it has no obligation to the investors.
Richard left the Center determined to start again, and many of the volunteer staff followed suit soon after. Now, after a lifetime of bringing affordable photography instruction to anyone, regardless of income or skill level, Richard is at it again. In February of 2009, Richard and his teachers and volunteers opened for business as Richard Stromberg's Chicago Photography Classes (RSCPC).
The new location is on the mid-North side of Chicago: 500 feet from the Irving Park El stop on the CTA Brown Line, 10 minutes west from Lake Shore Drive and 15 minutes east from 90/94 on Irving Park Road at the NE corner of Ravenswood Avenue (4001 N Ravenswood Avenue, 1st Floor). This address also houses the WithInSight Gallery, Chicago's first gallery to use LED daylight bulbs that have no UV or IR radiation, which ensures archival permanence of the Photographs.
Richard's plan: Translate 46 years of photojournalism and 40 years of teaching to offer comprehensive classes – for everyone – at competitive prices.
